Refreshed Fiat 500 hatchback unveiled in Europe

Fiat is freshening up the European-spec 500 subcompact with a handful of updates inside and out.

As with any mid-life refresh, the changes are mostly cosmetic. The front fascia has been retouched ever-so-slightly with new headlights, LED daytime running lights and chrome trim, bringing it more in-line with the 500X crossover.

The tweaks are much the same out back, with new ring-shaped tail lights and, once again, more chrome trim, while new wheels round out the exterior updates.

It’s a different story inside. One of our biggest nitpicks with the current 500 is the tacked-on infotainment system; Fiat has addressed that – at least in Europe, for now – with a centre-mounted touchscreen running the incredibly intuitive Uconnect infotainment system. There’s also a crisp TFT display in the instrument panel, right in front of the driver.

Under the skin, European-spec 500s will be powered by either a 1.2-litre engine good for 69 horsepower, or either one of two TwinAir engines producing 89 and 105 horsepower, respectively. Europeans can also spec their 500s with a diesel engine and, of course, expect to see Abarth versions very soon.

Fiat Chrysler hasn’t announced any details specific to North America, but we’re expecting to see similar changes to our version of the 500 very soon.
