Honda just set a new Guinness World Record for fuel economy after covering 8,387 miles across Europe.
Honda engineers Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren crossed all 24 countries in the European Union, averaging 100.31 miles per gallon in a diesel-powered Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC over the course of 25 days.

Starting out in Aalst, Belgium, McGrath and Warren followed Guinness’ rules closely. They made no modifications to the Civic, inflated the tires to Honda’s exact specifications and filled the fuel tank to its maximum capacity. With logs of data backing up their efficiency claims, the Civic averaged 932 miles per tank, beating Honda’s European-cycle fuel economy ratings of 74.3 mpg by more than 25 per cent.
As you might imagine, the drive didn’t quite seem like an easy one. McGrath and Warren drove an average of 380 miles and 7.5 hours per day, hovering around 51 miles per hour. Needless to say, McGrath says he and Warren are “just happy to be behind our desks for a while.”

The run took McGrath and Warren through 24 countries over 25 days.
