According to a report from Autocar, Mini will release a production version of the Superleggera convertible concept in 2019.
The upcoming model will be front-wheel-drive, but AWD will be available on high-performance models. A 227-horsepower John Cooper Works variant is also planned. We can expect a myriad of three and four cylinder powerplants for the new convertible including, a 216-horsepower AWD hybrid.
The Mini will likely compete with the Mazda Miata and the eventual Fiat 124. Mini boss Peter Schwarzenbauer stated that “the interest was tremendous when we showed this concept car. We are now working hard to get it on the street.”
“It’s an economically challenging project and there is no firm decision, but we have a lot of people here that are fighting for it. I think it would be extremely good for the brand.” Schwarzenbauer said, adding doesn’t see the Superleggera as a replacement for the current Mini coupe and roadster.
“The Superleggera is a serious sports car,” he said.
