Lamborghini wowed us with the graceful four-door Estoque concept roughly a year ago but the public voted loudly instead for an Audi Q7-based SUV dubbed the Urus.
As the Estoque joins the ranks of never-t0-be-built concept cars, the Urus inches towards production in 2018 and according to Autocar, it may feature hybrid or even diesel power. There is also the very real possibility of a pumped-up SV version.
Lamborghini hasn’t officially revealed engine details other than saying that horsepower will be around the 600 mark. The shocking news for Lamborghini traditionalists is that Autocar “understands that the production version of the Urus will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain using a modified version of parent company Audi’s new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, as used by the new S6, S7 and S8, in combination with an electric motor.” That should ruffle some feathers but Lamborghini has toyed with hybrid power before with the Asterion concept.
The article also claims that Lamborghini isn’t ruling out the possibility of a diesel engine in the new super SUV. We expect the SUV to sell for approximately $300,000 and it will be comparable in size to the current BMW X6 M. Lamborghini also says it will have best in class C02 emissions, possibly through the aid of that hybrid powertrain.
Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann says that the Urus “signifies for us the beginning of a new era.” The era of a hybrid Lamborghini SUVs may soon be upon us.
