In light of strong demand for Ram pickups, Chrysler is considering adding a third plant in North America.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told Automotive News he and other Fiat-Chrysler execs are still considering whether to open up a third plant in North America to meet increased Ram demand.

Marchionne says he would rather boost production numbers by 15 to 20 per cent in Warren, Mich., and Saltillo, Mexico, without requiring a third plant. During a conference call last week, Marchionne says the chance of building a new plant is “under 50 per cent.”

The Ram lineup was refreshed last year with a facelift and a new diesel engine. By the end of 2013, Ram sales were up 21 per cent to 355,673 trucks in the U.S., while Canadian sales were boosted by 16 per cent to 78,793, from 67,634 in 2012.
