Jaguar says its all-new F-Pace is based on the C-X17 concept it revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the luxury crossover Coventry it’s showing off this year is more important than just faithfulness to a concept. It’s the physical acknowledgement that even storied brands like Jaguar – as well as many other luxury automakers – need an SUV in their portfolio if they want to grow.

The F-Pace, however, will remain unique. Like all of Jaguar’s other products, it uses Lightweight Aluminum Architecture to reduce weight and improve performance. Like other Jags, there’s an emphasis in ride and handling, suspension duties handled by double wishbones at the front and a multi-link system at the back.
Top-of-the-range models will feature humongous 22-inch alloy wheels — developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division — with low-profile performance radials. Traction is also enhanced with Jaguar’s latest torque-on-demand all-wheel-drive system with Intelligent Drive Dynamics which also includes a torque vectoring system to distribute the engine’s power across each axle.

The F-Pace’s top-of-the-line engine model, powered by Jag’s 380-horsepower supercharged 3.0-litre V6, will accelerate the luxury crossover from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Besides the supercharged V6s — a 340-hp version is also available — the F-Pace will also be available with a turbodiesel four-cylinder. Yes, a diesel in a Jaguar: the long-awaited Ingenium 2.0-litre four-cylinder pumps out 180 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque that promises performance and frugality.
The diesel F-Pace will be priced at $49,900 when it arrives in Spring 2016. The 340-horsepower V6 will start at $53,900, while the range-topping 380-horsepower variant amps up the performance and price to $66,400.
