Nissan reveals diesel-powered Frontier in Chicago

Nissan has announced an all-new diesel engine for its Frontier pickup at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.

Known as the Frontier Diesel Runner, the truck will be powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. Power numbers haven’t been confirmed just yet, but Nissan says it pumps out roughly 200 horsepower and “more than” 350 lb.-ft. of torque, and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by ZF. The Cummins diesel also provides better towing and improves fuel economy by 35 per cent when compared to the V6-powered Frontier, according to Nissan.

Although the Frontier Diesel Runner isn’t confirmed for production at this point in time, Nissan says the Frontier Diesel Runner “serves to both gauge the market reaction to a Nissan mid-size pickup with a diesel engine and plot a potential future direction for the Frontier.”

The Diesel Runner is finished in a special-edition colour called “Arrest Me Red” accented by matte silver and carbon-fibre accents. It also gets a unique chin spoiler, a mesh grille, a unique hood and two-tone 16-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the Diesel Runner continues the red-on-silver-on-carbon theme with red accents and carbon fibre-like trim on the seats, as well as silver stitching. The instrument panel is finished in carbon fibre, and red-tinted gauges are unique to the model.

In addition to the Frontier Diesel Runner, Nissan is planning a Cummins-powered Titan, set to arrive in 2015.
