Mazda debuting new sports car concept at Tokyo Motor Show

Since Mazda discontinued the RX-8 in 2012, rumours have been swirling endlessly over a possible successor, but there hasn’t been anything remotely solid as far as a confirmation from the Japanese automaker.

That’s about to change with an all-new sports car concept set to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

Mazda has remained very tight-lipped over additional details – heck, all we have is this shadowy teaser image revealing very little, aside from classic sports car proportions – a long hood, coupled with a fastback profile and a short rear decklid. Squint hard enough and there’s a bit of Mercedes-AMG GT in there, which isn’t a knock against Mazda in the slightest.

What lies under the hood remains to be seen. Mazda is reportedly still working on a rotary engine; there’s a chance it could find its way into the mysterious concept, but we’re taking the possibility of a true rotary-powered RX successor with a very large grain of salt before the Tokyo Motor Show officially kicks off on October 28.
