BMW is turning up the heat in the X4 lineup with a new model for 2016.
Yes, it carries the M badge. No, it’s not a full-blown X4 M. The M40i is to the X4 as the M235i is to the 2 Series lineup – a half-step between the standard X4 and an X4 M version, if such a model actually existed.
Proving it’s more than just a trim package, the X4 M40i is powered by BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, tuned to pump out 355 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque. That kick is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, letting the X4 M40i sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in a rather impressive 4.7 seconds.

The X4 M40i is fitted with a number of other performance upgrades, such as larger anti-roll bars, uniquely tuned suspension bits, a throatier exhaust system, stickier Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires and an all-wheel-drive system tweaked to send more power to the rear axle by default.
Outside, the X4 M40i is essentially an X4 with the M Sport package, but with a few bits to differentiate the two. The M40i wears a set of side mirrors finished in Ferric Grey, as well as black chrome exhaust tips and optional 20-inch wheels. Like the exterior, the interior brings most of the bits from the M Sport package as standard equipment, including an M-badged steering wheel, shift knob and sport seats.
Expect the X4 M40i to hit dealerships across North America next February.
