Buick is working on a Verano hot hatch for China

Proving it’s still serious about shedding the octogenarian image, Buick is planning a hot hatch for the Chinese market.

Set to join the Buick lineup across the Pacific Ocean by the end of this year, the Verano GS will be powered by a 166-horsepower turbo-four, hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Buick says the Verano GS will also receive unique suspension components tuned on the Nürburgring.

Based on the teaser image, the Verano GS will wear more aggressive styling cues, such as dark wheels, red bumper accents and a unique spoiler. Along with the GS, Buick will also offer a standard version of the Verano hatchback, utilizing the same platform bits as the sedan.

There’s no official word yet if GM plans to offer either the Verano hatchback or GS in North America. We wouldn’t rule it out, however, seeing as GM is considering a Chevrolet Cruze hatchback.
