Students at a Montreal mechanics school will be getting an early Christmas gift in the form of a Toyota Yaris hatchback.

Toyota-Montreal Nord, a family-run business of 39 years, will be handing off the keys to a fully-loaded 2012 Yaris SE model to L’Ecole de L’Automobile at a ceremony at the school, located at 7555 Boul Henri-Bourassa E, on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.

Daniel Alloul, vice-president of the Montreal dealership, said student mechanics at the school will be using the subcompact car to learn the trade.

“The economy isn’t doing so great, so we decided to help these guys,” Alloul said. “The school’s also right next to us, and we decided it’d be good to give back to the community.”

One of the biggest dealerships in the city, Toyota-Montreal Nord has been involved in numerous charity efforts, but this is the first time they’ve donated a car to a school, Alloul said.

Representatives from the dealership, as well as some from Toyota Canada, will be on hand for the ceremony. Alloul says an invitation has also been sent out to Mayor Denis Coderre.

Starting at $14,595, the Yaris hatchback is one of the most popular small cars in Quebec.
