Volvo S90 officially headed to Detroit Auto Show

If Volvo’s concept from the Los Angeles Auto Show last week wasn’t quite what you were expecting, the Swedish automaker has something more traditional headed for Detroit.

The highly anticipated Volvo S90 luxury sedan will officially debut in January, firmly taking aim at the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class while replacing the aging S80.

The teaser images don’t reveal as much as the model cars, but it’s safe to expect much of the XC90‘s technology and underpinnings under the skin of the new S90. That means we’ll see a similar chassis and powertrains – including a plug-in hybrid version – as well as Volvo’s cutting-edge safety equipment and infotainment system.

The V90 wagon is set to join the S90 at some point, but details are still thin on that particular model. For now, we’ll have to make do with Volvo’s shadowy teaser images.

We’ll bring you more on the North American International Auto Show when it kicks off January 11 in Detroit.
