GENEVA – With the thinly disguised S-Class Coupe Concept debuting at last fall’s Frankfurt auto show, we’ve had a few months to get used to what the production version of the replacement for the outgoing CL-Class (the German automaker’s largest two-door) would look like. And here it is: the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.
What we didn’t know last fall was that the new S-Class Coupe would be the world’s first production car that can literally lean into corners, a technology first seen on the Mercedes-Benz F400 Carving concept in 2001. Integrated into the S-Class Coupe’s Magic Body Control (a system first seen on the new S-Class sedan), the S-Class Coupe can “see” oncoming turns via a stereo camera mounted in the windshield and something Mercedes calls a “transverse acceleration sensor.” Subsequently, the hydraulic shocks of the air suspension adjust their rate of firmness and can incline the Coupe’s body by as much as 2.5 degrees between 30 kilometres an hour and 120 to reduce the amount of body lean affecting passengers while cornering.
If that’s not gee-whiz enough for you, the new S-Class Coupe will also come chock-a-block with all the safety and luxury features from the just as ostentatious S-Class sedan, including a new “perfumed” interior feature.
