The next-generation Chevrolet Volt could debut as early as next year with an all-new front-wheel-drive powertrain.
According to Edmunds, the look of GM’s extended-range hybrid will remain mostly unchanged. Rather than a radical redesing, the styling changes will be more evolutionary and keep the five-door hatchback configuration.
“It’s different, but not drastically different,” an unnamed source within GM told Edmunds. “Just really a bit of a styling change to it.”
The Volt has been on the market since 2010 and is GM’s second crack at electrification since the Saturn EV-1 of the 1990s. GM hasn’t dished any concrete details, but it is said the upcoming Volt will be underpinned by a new platform developed for the car.
More than likely, the Volt will retain its powertrain configuration — a 1.4-litre gasoline engine that serves as a generator for the car’s lithium-ion battery.
