The ultimate gift

VANCOUVER – Have you made your list and checked it twice?

Is there someone who’s been nice enough this year to receive a shiny new car for Christmas? Perhaps you’re thinking of treating yourself to the ultimate holiday present.

While this is the time of year many of us flock to the mall for holiday gift shopping, car buyers can find especially good deals on the showroom floor. During the holiday season, the list of discounts, cash back incentives and attractive financing options abound as car dealers and makers work hard to meet annual sales targets as well as create space for new models.

Take a few things into consideration before you hit the showroom floor. If you have flexibility on colour and model features, you may find a great deal on a car that’s only a few months old. Unless there’s a major redesign on the model you’re looking at, the difference in look won’t be nearly as significant as the price difference. Buying a car before the end of the year can also mean additional tax benefits for individuals and businesses, depending on the type of car purchased and how it will be used.

Just as you would with any other gift, make sure you keep the receipt and check on the dealer’s exchange policy in case the person you are giving the car to wants to make any changes. This often isn’t an issue and a process can be put in place in ahead of time if your salesperson understands that the vehicle is a gift. You can also talk to your new car dealer about whether a deferred payment plan is the right option.

That being said, put some thought into your recipient’s sense of style — and choose a car you think best suits them, not you. If they currently own a car, what do they like about it most; what do they like least? What new features would benefit them most?

Consider buying a certified used vehicle, giving that someone special all the benefits of a new car, for a less expensive price tag. You may even want to move them into an upgraded model or add some features for the savings difference. The good news is that most certified vehicles come with warranty coverage beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.

Last, but not least, work with your new car dealer to make the moment extra special. You can certainly have your dealer hold the vehicle until you’re ready for the big reveal — and many will provide that big red bow that’s sure to put a smile on any face.
