Hot on the heels of yesterday’s news of a possible 800-horsepower Nissan GT-R hybrid, rumours are beginning to trickle out about Infiniti’s future flagship sedan.

After speaking to unnamed sources within Infiniti, Motor Trend suggests the Japanese automaker is already in the planning stages of a new range-topping sedan. Should the rumours hold true, it will be positioned above the Q50 and based heavily on the Essence concept from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Furthermore, it will be aimed squarely at the likes of the Porsche Panamera and less so the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, given Renault-Nissan’s partnership with Daimler.

Motor Trend‘s sources say Infiniti’s flagship will wear either the Q80 or Q90 nameplate. Of course, powertrain details are still up in the air, but rather than reusing the Nissan GT-R’s engine, we can expect two particular engines with this new model: a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 and a twin-turbocharged 3.7-litre V6.

Both will be paired to a hybrid powertrain, but power numbers will differ significantly. The 3.0-litre powertrain is expected to produce about 550 horsepower, but we can expect somewhere around 700 horsepower from the 3.7-litre hybrid powertrain.
