Mitsubishi has confirmed that the next-generation of its ASX and Pajero SUVs, known as the RVR and Montero in North America, will be plug-in hybrids.

The move follows Mitsubishi’s intent to have plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles make up 20 per cent of the company’s output by 2020. According to CarAdvice, the Japanese automaker called the move “the beginning of a new era” following the launch of the Outlander PHEV in Australia. Mitsubishi says the plug-in variant of the Outlander signifies “the advanced technology direction of its future product portfolio.”

The future plug-in ASX and Pajero SUVs were previewed by the XR-PHEV and GC-PHEV, respectively, at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The XR-PHEV is powered by a turbocharged 1.1-litre engine mated to a hybrid powertrain, while the GC-PHEV pairs a supercharged V6 engine to its hybrid powertrain.
