It’s no question Porsche‘s flat-six engine has established itself as a hallmark for the brand’s sports cars, but a new report suggests a four-cylinder could be in the pipeline for the next Boxster and Cayman.
According to Autoweek, Porsche CEO Matthias Müller told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport future Porsche road cars will follow in the footsteps of the Le Mans-bound 919 Hybrid and receive four-cylinder engines in a bid to reduce emissions.
“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman,” Müller said. “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2.”
Granted, it will be down two cylinders, but the new engines will follow the horizontally-opposed layout arguably perfected by the flat-six. Müller didn’t detail any specific output numbers, but he suggested we could expect up to 395 horsepower.
Putting that into perspective, the range-topping Boxster and Cayman GTS pump out 325 and 335 horsepower, respectively, from their 3.4-litre flat-six engines. If Müller’s word holds true, the flat-four engines will no doubt close the gap further between the Cayman and 911.
