For many, reaching the age of 40 isn’t exactly a sprightly milestone. By that point, bedtime is at 10 p.m., you probably have a family and two cats and your idea of a “fun” night is sipping tea while catching up on the latest episode of Bones.
That’s also about the time when the mid-life crisis starts, where you try holding on to any remaining shred of youth. We can think of plenty of vehicles that, if they were human, would probably be experiencing a mid-life crisis right about now. The Volkswagen Golf isn’t one of them, even if it did celebrate its 40th anniversary earlier this week.
In fact, since March 29, 1974 and after 30 million examples were built, the Golf is one of the benchmark compact cars on the market. Let’s not forget that the Golf is the forefather of a segment enthusiasts across the globe likely couldn’t live without — had it not been for the GTI, we wouldn’t have the “hot hatchback” we know and love to this day.
