How not to die in an avalanche

Just came across this amazing video compiled by the Canadian Avalanche Centre, which is trying to make sure no one gets killed while snowmobiling this year.

With today’s machines able to go higher and further and sooner into the mountains than ever before, leading sledders further into danger if they don’t know what they’re doing, this brilliant video captures not only the essence of the risk, but how it can be mitigated. The first 28-minute video, with eight more chapters that follow, circles around on a March 20, 2004 avalanche fatality. Every year, people die in avalanche-related fatalities. Some of the worst years have been: 2003, 29 deaths; 2009, 26 deaths; 1998, 22 deaths; 2008, 18 deaths.

Filmmaker Francois Desrosiers of FD Productions shot the video in 2012-13 with a host of riders across BC, capturing some great action but also some straight-shooting commentary from avalanche experts, brand-name riders and avalanche survivors.
