Volkswagen teases two new concepts ahead of Beijing debuts

Volkswagen has just released a handful of sketches of a new concept headed to this year’s Beijing Motor Show.

Despite the seemingly generic name — the Volkswagen Midsize Coupe — the concept wears a look similar to the Golf and Jetta, but combined with the “proportions of an extremely sporty nature.”

Volkswagen also outlines the fact that in spite of the name, the Midsize Coupe is shorter but wider than the Jetta and Passat. As for the powertrain, Volkswagen has fitted its ubiquitous turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood, lending to a zero-to-100 km/h jaunt in 6.5 seconds.

In addition to the Midsize Coupe Concept, Volkswagen will showcase the Golf R400. Powered by a significantly uptuned version of the Golf R’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the R400 pumps out 395 horsepower and fed to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The most promising part is that Volkswagen says it is possible for the R400 to become a reality in the form of a limited-production model. If it does, expect a zero-to-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174 miles per hour — two impressive figures for a hot hatchback.

Keep an eye on Driving for the latest on the Beijing Motor Show when it kicks off next week.
