Yesterday, we caught wind about BMW releasing a special edition of the M5 to commemorate its 30th anniversary. Turns out, it’s true.
Limited to 300 examples worldwide, the BMW M5 “30 Jahre M5″ (German for “30 years of the M5) is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-litre V8 engine. True to the leak earlier this week, the limited model comes standard with the Competition Package, boosting output to 600 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque.
Paired exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, BMW says the limited-edition M5 sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Other mechanical upgrades include an Active M Differential tweaked to react sooner when exiting corners, as well as an M Dynamic mode sharpened to make use of the added power and 20-inch wheels.

Inside, the 30 Jahre M5 sports Alcantara throughout.
Handout, BMW
In addition to the performance upgrades, the car is finished in Frozen Dark Silver Metallic, with the requisite “30 Jahre M5″ badges and dark chrome trim bits all around. Inside, the 30 Jahre M5 sports Alcantara trim on the seats, door panels, centre console and steering wheel.
Of the 300 examples available worldwide, only 30 are headed south of the border with a price tag of US$138,275. And because it takes a lot to control a 600-horsepower super sedan, BMW is throwing in a day’s worth of M Driving School lessons at The Thermal Club, a private racetrack in California.
