In a recent post titled Proof automakers forgot us: Five cars Canadians can’t buy, nearly 3,400 of you voted between the Volkswagen Scirocco, Honda Civic Type R, Audi RS 6 Avant, Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Renault Mégane Renaultsport in a poll of which foreign car you’d like to bring to Canada.
The Alfa Romeo Guilietta came in first with about 930 votes, followed by the Volkswagen Scirocco in second at 815 votes. The two actually make good competitors on the road, as well. Both hot hatches are well known for their sharp looks and equally sharp performance, but also for being practical (usually a given with hatchbacks). In these parts of the world, they’re also well-known for being completely out of reach. Blast.

Alfa Romeo's Giulietta needs to be brought over to Canada ... for reasons. Very speedy reasons.
The Scirocco (a three-door hatch) and the Giulietta (a five-door) both share platforms with cars we can buy in Canada (the Scirocco is based on the VW Golf and the Giulietta shares a platform with the Dodge Dart), but it’s just not the same. Neither of the cars offered in Canada have the aggressive looks or sporty driving that their platform-mates have. They’re not as pretty, not as sharp, and not as desirable because they’re so common. It’s true that we want what we can’t have.
Both cars come with a variety of engine options, ranging from turbocharged four-cylinders to meaty diesels. The best thing about these is that they’re not outrageously priced, so people like you and I can have some fun, too. Well, not really me, because I live in Canada and can’t buy these cars, but if they were miraculously brought over, they wouldn’t be completely out of reach.
