Hot on the heels of the 2015 Ford Mustang, rumours are beginning to trickle out about the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro.
According to Automobile Magazine, the biggest change we could likely see is an optional turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Like the Mustang, GM’s 3.6-litre V6 will remain the base engine, while a 2.0-litre turbo-four — based on the one found in the ATS — will be the mid-range option. Naturally, the 6.2-litre V8 will keep its title as the range-topping engine found in the SS.
As for the platform, GM is expected to switch from the current Zeta platform to the all-new Alpla underpinnings. In particular, the Camaro will likely use the long-wheelbase variant from the CTS, which would make it about one inch shorter than the Dodge Challenger, but roughly 7.5 inches longer than the Mustang. The platform switch is expected to not only shrink the car’s footprint, but reduce its weight as well, although we don’t know by how much just yet.
On the styling front, Automobile says GM will continue the retro styling with the 2016 Camaro, but will instead have cues from the second-generation model. GM hasn’t dished any official details just yet, but it would no doubt need to step up its game to take on the 2015 Mustang.
