BMW considering high-perfomance M7 sedan

When the next-generation of the BMW 7 Series rolls out, we could finally see a high-performance variant.

According to Autocar UK (hat tip to AutoGuide), the upcoming 7 Series is expected to see a significant weight reduction thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials throughout the chassis, including aluminum, magnesium and carbon fibre reinforced plastic, as well as the same manufacturing process as the i3 and i8. BMW engineers say the new 7 Series should be up to 200 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model, putting it lighter than the current 535i.

Although it can be argued with certain models — the X5 and X6 M come to mind — a low curb weight is one of the most critical aspects to BMW’s M formula. Sure, it won’t be as light as an M4, but the 7 Series’ weight reduction opens up the possibility of a high-performance variant, be it a full-fledged M7 or an M750i, similar to the European-spec M550i.

Take this latest development with a gran of salt, but an M7, aimed at the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG and Porsche Panamera Turbo S, is long overdue.
