Every single car has a lot in common: wheels, an engine, a steering wheel, etc. Sometimes, though, a weird feature comes along that leaves us scratching our heads. Here are some of the most confusingly useless features we’ve ever seen:
Nissan’s “Shag Dash Topper”
Even the people at Nissan didn’t immediately know what this dashboard toupee was and had to do some research to figure it out. Only available on the Cube (which is now discontinued), the Shag Topper is part of a $255 “Interior Designer Kit” that includes other practical things like cargo mats. What is this Shag Topper even used for? Petting? Companionship? Maybe it’s like a fuzzy pet rock?
BMW’s Bat signal
If you buy a BMW 2 Series convertible and are prone to forgetting what you drive, BMW offers a LED beam that projects its logo onto the floor when you open the door. This is an excessive and pompous way to remind yourself and people around you that you drive a BMW and think you’re Batman. Yes, you drive a BMW, but you are not Bruce Wayne. Shine your light somewhere else and go away.
Mini’s beat-pulsating, colour-changing disco lights
This is kind of a neat feature, if you enjoy turning your Mini into a disco. The Mini Cooper offers ambient lights that change colour and can even dance and pulsate to the beat of whatever music you’re playing. Your friends may think this is cool, but I’m thinking the novelty will wear off pretty soon. Why would Mini put such a strange feature into a car? Because it’s weird and quirky, and that’s what Mini does best.
Toyota’s “Party Mode” button
When I think Toyota, I think party! Maybe not so much, but the Party Mode button has been a big mystery to anyone who has ever driven a 4Runner. What exactly happens when you press the mysterious Party Mode button? Disco lights? Confetti? Nope. The button simply turns on the bass for audio system for the rear seats and makes the music back there louder. Unfortunately, the Party Mode button was taken out for the 2014 model year. No more party for you.
