Mitsubishi will add two plug-in hybrid vehicles to its lineup, but the caveat is that they’ll be available in Europe, at least initially.
According to Automotive News, Mitsubishi’s new vehicles will be plug-in hybrid variants of the Pajero SUV and the next-generation ASX compact crossover, known as the RVR here in Canada.
The upcoming ASX is expected to be launched across the globe in 2016, followed by the plug-in hybrid variant a year later. Although the Pajero is no longer sold in North America, Mitsubishi CEO says the plug-in version will arrive in Europe come 2018.
Currently, Mitsubishi’s green lineup consists of the Outlander plug-in hybrid and the i-MiEV electric car. Technical details of either SUV haven’t been announced, but the Outlander plug-in hybrid is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, rated at 121 horsepower and paired to a 60 kW electric motor.
The Outlander plug-in is currently offered in Europe, but Mitsubishi is on track to launch it here in 2015.
