BMW has announced it will introduce a new GT3-class racecar for the 2016 season.
Since 2010, BMW has offered a race-prepped Z4 for GT3-class teams, but the automaker will be retiring it at the end of 2015 and will replace it for the 2016 racing season with the M6. The automaker says development of the M6 GT3 is already underway and expects testing to begin in the first quarter of next year.
Like the production car on which it’s based, the M6 GT3 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8, but will be modified specifically for the track. Expect to also see the requisite chassis, transmission and electronic upgrades, as well as weight savings and aerodynamic tweaks.
