Toyota remains the leader of hybrids as the Japanese automaker announced it crossed a milestone 17 years after the Prius was first introduced.
Through September, Toyota has officially sold more than 7 million hybrids across the globe. That figure encompasses every hybrid, including those under the Lexus brand, introduced since we first saw the Prius in 1997.
“Hitting the 7 million mark represents our customers’ recognition of the benefits of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles,” Bob Carter, Toyota’s senior vice president in charge of automotive operations, said in a statement. “The appeal of excellent fuel economy, driving dynamics and the quality of our vehicles combined with our dealers’ dedication to customer service makes Toyota the undeniable leader in hybrid technology.”
Currently, Toyota’s lineup consists of 27 hybrids and one plug-in hybrid sold in 90 markets across the globe. In North America, we get 12 of those and the Prius plug-in. Toyota’s hybrid sales in the U.S. alone make up for 70 per cent of industry-wide hybrid sales.
