Honda HR-V making its North American debut in L.A.

Honda’s entry into the growing subcompact crossover market is destined for the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Known as the Vezel in Japan — where it is also already on sale — the Honda HR-V will be making its North American debut next month. Positioned below the CR-V in size and price, the HR-V is destined to compete with the likes of the Chevrolet Trax and Nissan Juke.

Mechanically, the HR-V will be identical to the Fit hatchback. They both share a platform, and although Honda hasn’t revealed official powertrain details yet, expect to see the Fit’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine developing 130 horsepower and 114 lb.-ft. of torque while being paired to a continuously variable transmission.

Honda also promises the HR-V will see the Fit’s innovative cargo tricks, including a centre-mounted fuel tank and the company’s Magic Seats, which can be configured multiple ways, including the ability to fold the second row completely flat.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the Honda HR-V will go on sale in Canada next spring.
