Rumours of more Opel models finding their way into North America have been running wild since the introduction of the Regal sedan in 2011. Since then, we’ve seen the Opel Mokka rebadged as the Chevrolet Trax and the Buick Encore, while it’s no secret the Regal shares its underpinnings with the Opel Insignia sport sedan.
While nothing official has been confirmed on GM’s end, Motor Trend says GM went ahead and registered the Opel Cascada and Calibra with the U.S. Patent and Trademarks office in December.
The Opel Cascada is a convertible, sharing its underpinnings with the Chevy Cruze and the Buick Verano (which itself is the North American version of the Opel Astra sedan). The Calibra was a two-door coupe based on the Opel Vectra, the Insignia/Regal’s predecessor, before going out of production in the 1990s.
This isn’t a guarantee on GM’s part, but in 2008, it registered the “Opel Astra” before selling it in North America as the Saturn Astra. If the past is any indication, we could see even more European flavour injected into Buick’s lineup. Psst, GM, don’t forget about the Opel Astra GTC.
