It’s no secret BMW and Toyota are working together on a new sports car based on the FT-1 concept. In the midst of all the rumours, a new report suggests the car will cost more than a Chevrolet Corvette when it debuts.
Speaking with an unnamed source familiar with the project, Car and Driver says we’ll see it ring in above the base Corvette’s US$54,995 ($56,645 in Canada) price tag. This means both automakers will need to be prepared to take on the Corvette with more than 400 horsepower from a turbocharged V6 or a hybrid powertrain, as well as rear-wheel-drive. Neither BMW nor Toyota have confirmed a name for the car, but Supra is most likely on Toyota’s end given the FT-1 is billed as the Supra’s successor.

It’s been previously been rumoured the sports car will serve as a replacement for the BMW Z4, but given the impending price premium over the Toyota version, this could mean the car will be too expensive as a direct Z4 replacement.
Differentiation between both cars is also key to justify the price, be it BMW makes their version a convertible or includes more power and/or carbon fibre chassis bits, pushing it more towards the same sports car league as the Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911.
