It’s no secret the hot hatchback is a formula much loved by automotive enthusiasts alike. Going by the success Ford has seen with the Fiesta ST, GM North America CEO Mark Reuss says he’d “love” to see a high-performance Chevrolet Sonic.
There aren’t any firm plans, but Reuss told Automotive News that Chevrolet has the chops to turn the Sonic into a high-performance alternative to the likes of the Fiat 500 Abarth and the Fiesta ST. Currently, the RS serves as the Sonic’s performance model, complete with stiffer springs and various cosmetic touches.
The Sonic RS shares a turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-four with the lesser Sonic LTZ, pumping out an identical 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. But to take on any other pocket rockets, the Sonic needs to up its horsepower game. The Fiesta ST pumps out 197 horsepower, while the Veloster Turbo and 500 Abarth are good for 201 and 160 horsepower, respectively.
