Volkswagen adds Alltrack variant to Passat lineup

Volkswagen is taking aim at the likes of the Subaru Outback with its all-new Passat Alltrack.

The second-generation Passat Alltrack follows the formula we’ve seen in vehicles like the Outback, as well as the Audi Allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country, in that it’s basically a taller, wagon version of the standard Passat sedan. The Alltrack version sees softer-tuned suspension components, underbody protection and body cladding, and your choice between 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The Passat Alltrack is powered by Volkswagen’s new 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine good for 237 horsepower, but the company’s ubiquitous gasoline 2.0-litre turbo-four is also available, paired to either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is standard, along with the company’s so-called XDS+ differential lock and a revised ABS, throttle control and shift-point system to maximize traction off-road.

Given the North American-spec Passat is a different model than the one available in Europe, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the Alltrack version here. That being said, Volkswagen does intend to offer a Golf Alltrack later this year in Canada.
