Easily the oldest model in the Swedish automaker’s lineup, Volvo‘s Lex Kerssemakers dropped a handful of details for the upcoming XC90.
Due out in 2015, the XC90 will be offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain which Volvo calls “Twin Engine”. At the heart of the hybrid will be a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rated at 300 horsepower. Paired to an electric motor, the powertrain is expected to deliver a grand total of 442 lb.-ft. of torque and the promise of “class-leading mileage”, Kerssemakers told Drive Australia.
With the exception of the XC90 ushering in Volvo’s next-generation design language, little else is known about the upcoming SUV. It will borrow much of its look from the Volvo Concept Coupe, which made its debut earlier this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, including its C-shaped LED daytime running lights and grille design. The 2015 XC90 will also be the first Volvo to be built on the company’s new Scaleable Platform Architecture, developed in partnership with Chinese automaker Geely.
You can also bet safety will be Volvo’s top priority with the upcoming XC90. Even if the current one has been around for 10 years — going on 11 — it’s still one of the safest cars on the road.
