BBC confirms Jeremy Clarkson fired from Top Gear

Following a suspension with a producer earlier this month, the BBC has confirmed Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has been fired.

BBC director Tony Hall announced the news in a statement today following the network’s investigation into the matter. Hall says he hadn’t “taken this decision lightly” and is aware it will “divide opinion” among Top Gear fans, but remained adamant that “a line has been crossed” and he couldn’t “condone what has happened on this occasion.”

Earlier this month, Clarkson reportedly punched and verbally abused Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon after a “fracas” over hot food not being readily available at a hotel for the show’s crew following a long day’s worth of filming. The investigation found Tymon had to be hospitalized afterwards.

Following the incident, Clarkson reported himself to the BBC, which resulted in his suspension from the show. As a result, more than 1 million fans called for the BBC to re-instate Clarkson.
