GM will offer the next-generation Chevrolet Malibu with a hybrid powertrain with significant efficiency gains.
Powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine paired to a two-motor electric drive unit, the 2016 Malibu hybrid is expected to pump out a combined 182 horsepower and sip 45 miles per gallon. No matter how you slice it, that’s a sizable jump in efficiency compared to the outoging Malibu hybrid.
Thanks to its 80-cell, 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, GM says the car can travel up to 50 miles per hour in electric mode, and can also harness power through regenerative braking. The new Malibu hybrid will also see an Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery system – a system that uses discarded exhaust gases to help the engine and interior warm up quicker, virtually guaranteeing consistent fuel economy throughout the year, including winter.
The next-generation Malibu will debut at the New York Auto Show on April 1.
