The New York International Auto Show might be attracting all the chatter this week, but Hyundai took to the bi-annual Seoul Motor Show with a new concept.
It’s called the Racing Midship 2015, or RM15 for short. It might look like a race-ready Veloster, but there’s one key change under the skin – the engine, a 2.0-litre turbo-four good for 296 horsepower and 282 lb.-ft. of torque, is mounted in the middle.
Chances are slim we’ll see it built, but the RM15 is nonetheless an excellent demonstration of what Hyundai can do with an innovative, if not slightly crazy idea. For example, the chassis: it’s an aluminum spaceframe, and with body panels made out of carbon fibre reinforced plastic, the RM15 tips the scales at just 1,260 kilograms.
Not only is the RM15 lighter than the standard Veloster, it’s also better balanced with a 43:57 front-to-rear weight distribution and sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.
