Nissan adds automatic braking as standard equipment in Japan

Nissan is expanding its list of standard equipment by including more active safety features.

By this fall, Nissan’s most popular vehicles sold in Japan will come standard with automatic braking. Automotive News says the Nissan X-Trail hybrid, known here as the Rogue, will be the first to usher in the changes when it goes on sale next month with a price tag around US$24,ooo.

The move is similar to Toyota’s, which hopes to make advanced collision avoidance features more accessible on lower-end vehicles. By 2017, Toyota hopes to have such features either standard or optional across the board and won’t be limited to its home market – meaning we’ll see the changes in North America and Europe, too.

For now, Nissan’s changes seem as though they’d be limited to just the Japanese market, but that’s likely to change as advanced safety features like these continue to trickle down to lower-end vehicles.
