Hyundai is looking to curb distracted driving with a new type of feature.
According to AutoGuide, Hyundai recently filed a patent for technology that “limits or disables the use of some mobile device features,” all in an effort to reduce the dangers of distracted driving.
The filing is surprisingly well-detailed, giving us a good understanding of how the feature functions. Basically, a series of antennae placed around the car looks out for cell phone signals. That, combined with data from the vehicle such as speed, actively determines which cell phone functions can be used.
It’s a neat piece of technology, especially considering it lets drivers determine how much of an area it can block – be it the driver’s seat or the entire car – and what functions to limit based on the time of day and the importance of who is trying to contact the driver.
Last but not least, drivers will need a dedicated app installed on their own phones to make this technology work.
