Mercedes-Benz is reportedly planning a new 2+2 coupe aimed squarely at the Audi TT.
Rumours of the model first surfaced last month, but Autocar UK says Mercedes has begun working on the entry-level coupe. If all goes to plan, we’ll likely see the car hit production as early as 2019, built on Mercedes’ MFA platform – the same one that underpins models such as the A-, B- and CLA-Class models.
Powertrain details are still fuzzy, but given the underpinnings, we could see Mercedes’ 208-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-four under the hood of base models, as well as a range-topping AMG verstion with standard all-wheel-drive and as much as 400 horsepower.
As for the look, Autocar says it will draw design cues from the Mercedes-AMG GT. A convertible version is also planned, though it would be interesting how the droptop would fit into Mercedes’ lineup considering the SLK is the automaker’s current (and only) Audi TT competitor.
