Ford recalling 591,000 vehicles in North America

Ford has issued a recall covering approximately 591,000 cars, SUVs and pickup trucks across North America.

The largest recall covers 518,313 examples of the 2013-2015 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, as well as the redesigned 2015 Edge, in U.S. states and Canadian provinces where corrosion from road salt is possible throughout winter months. Ford says the steering gear motor attachment bolts could crack as a result of corrosion. Dealers will replace the steering gear motor with new bolts, seal them, and replace any damaged steering gears free of charge.

If this happens, the vehicle’s steering system could default to manual steering. Drivers will still be able to steer their cars, but the risk of a collision could increase. No accidents or injuries have been linked to this defect. In Canada, 31,012 vehicles are affected, while 487,301 vehicles are located in the U.S.

The second recall affects 50,157 Ford Focus, Edge, Escape and Transit Connect, along with the 2014-2015 Fiesta. According to Ford, fuel pumps are plated with nickel could sieze, leading to a stall or preventing the engine to start. Fuel delivery modules will be replaced on affected vehicles free of charge, while Ford says one accident is allegedly linked to this defect. Of the total vehicles covered in this recall, 45,505 are in the U.S., 4,618 are located in Canada and 34 are in Mexico.

Along with the potentially defective steering system, the Lincoln MKZ is the subject of another recall. This time, Ford says MKZs from 2015 could have parking lamps that are brighter than regulations would otherwise allow, which could affect the vision of other drivers. Ford will have dealers remedy the issue through an update to the car’s body control module. About 21,435 of the MKZs affected are in the U.S., as well as 1,066 in Canada and 115 in Mexico.

Ford is also calling back 100 2015 F-150 pickups over a heat shield that the automaker says could have been improperly installed. This could lead to a fire, but Ford says no incidents have resulted from this defect. The fix? Ford will install missing heat shield fasteners – for free – if required. Of the 100, 73 trucks are located in the U.S. and 18 are in Canada.

These four recalls come hot on the heels of a recall late last week where the American automaker called back 389,585 cars over door latches that could break.
