Jaguar is going to offer a diesel engine for the first time in North America when 2017 rolls around.

The new engine will appear under the hood of the base North American-spec XE 20d. Part of Jaguar’s new Ingenium family of engines, the 2.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder is rated at 180 horsepower and 318 lb.-ft. of torque. Horsepower matches the XE 20d’s closest competitor, the BMW 328d, but the XE has 38 more pound-feet of torque.

If oil-burners aren’t your thing, Jaguar is letting you step up to the XE 35t. Like the name suggests, this XE is powered by Jaguar’s ubiquitous 3.0-litre supercharged V6. Rated at 340 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque, the V6 lets the XE sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Both four-cylinder diesel and supercharged V6 XE sedans are linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel-drive is standard, although all-wheel-drive is also available.

As for trim levels, the XE will be available in base Premium, mid-range Prestige and range-topping R-Sport, regardless of engine choice. The R-Sport package adds cosmetic enhancements such as larger front air intakes, unique side vents and window trim, a rear spoiler and optional 20-inch alloy wheels.

The Jaguar XE will be available in North American dealers next spring.
