Porsche will begin offering flat-four engine on the Boxster and Cayman starting next year.
The word comes from Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller, who told Automotive News the U.S. will see two new four-cylinder engines halfway through 2016. The engines will be available either as 2.0L or 2.5-litre units and both will be turbocharged.
Specific output details are still under wraps, but Mueller says the larger 2.5L turbo-four could produce up to 395 horsepower. For comparison’s sake, the 3.8-litre flat-six found in the 911 Carrera S is rated at 400 horsepower.
Depending on how successful the move will be, Mueller says the turbo-four option could expand to other models, beyond the Boxster and Cayman. If the move works out, a turbocharged flat-four-powered Macan could be a possibility for North America – a realistic move considering the Macan is already available with Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four in the U.K. and China.
The last time North America saw a Porsche four-cylinder was in 1995, under the hood of the 968.
