Mitsubishi is planning a new mid-size sedan for its North American lineup with French automaker Renault.
According to a report out of Automotive News, Mitsubishi North America executive vice president Don Swearingen says nothing has been confirmed in terms of when it will hit the market, but the car is in its planning stages as part of a greater alliance between the two automakers. If the car is green-lit, it will be built by Renault and sold in North America under the Mitsubishi nameplate.
Mitsubishi’s last mid-size sedan was the Galant, which was discontinued back in 2012. In addition to the upcoming sedan, Mitsubishi is also considering selling the Mirage G4 subcompact sedan in North America. Powered by the same three-cylinder engine as the Mirage hatchback, the Mirage G4 is making its rounds along the Canadian auto show circuit as part of Mitsubishi’s way to determine whether or not the car will ultimately be sold in Canada.
The Mirage G4 is also being considered for the U.S. market. In addition to the talk of the Galant successor, Automotive News suggests more updates to the Mitsubishi lineup are on the way, including a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and a new CVT as part of a refresh for the 2015 RVR compact crossover. In addition to the RVR, the Outlander may also see a refresh for 2015.
