In addition to a compact car platform, Volvo and parent company Geely are working on a subcompact car that will likely be offered across the globe under the Geely nameplate.

The primary goal of the subcompact car will be to establish Geely’s safety reputation in markets across the globe, something Chinese automakers have been struggling with considerably, according to Automotive News. The car itself is already in the development stages at an R&D facility both Geely and Volvo opened up in Sweden last year.

Although there is no firm timeline as to when the Geely/Volvo subcompact might hit the market, it will likely be aimed at the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.
