Tesla is planning an additional variant of its upcoming Model 3 sedan.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Tesla will be adding a crossover variant to the Model 3, in a bid to make that particular lineup a gateway into the more expensive Model S and Model X. Due out in 2017, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the Model 3 will retail for about $35,000 in the U.S., and will be positioned as a Chevy Volt competitor with a 250-mile range.
The Model 3 crossover, on the other hand, will be a touch more expensive but still priced “well under” $50,000. It will be based on the same platform, which means we’ll still likely see the same 250-mile range, or 402 kilometres.
As for the Model X, deliveries are still on track to begin this fall.
