Nürburgring stopping automakers from setting lap records

Long regarded as the yardstick for which many performance cars are measured, the Nürburgring is putting a stop to lap records.

The surprising move comes after a serious collision last month where a GT3-spec Nissan GT-R flipped, flew into a spectator area and killed one person. Following the collision, track officials enacted a speed limit on Flugplatz, the particular stretch of track where the collision occurred, along with other high-speed stretches, making it virtually impossible for automakers to set lap records.

Koenigsegg was hit particularly hard by the news. J.F. Muisal, executive producer behind YouTube channel /DRIVE, broke the news on his blog after receiving a call from Koenigsegg CEO Christian Von Koenigsegg. Muisal and his team were on call to travel to the Nürburgring with the Swedish automaker, in a bid to document its track efforts in Apex.

However, not all hope is lost. While the restrictions put a damper on Koenigsegg’s plans, track officials say they will review the restrictions at the end of the year.
