The 22nd Gravenhurst Car Show drew over 500 cars under crystal clear skies this past Saturday in Gravenhurst, Ont.
Think of an oddity from yesteryear, and chances are you’d be able to find it at the one-day outdoor event. From a tax payer-funded Bricklin to an array of cars of every stripe and colour. Many were rods, but there were a few that stood out. For example, there was a 1950 Mercury Custom with a 1956 Cadillac front-end, shaved and decked hood/trunk, power doors and trunk, blended quarter panels and more space between the headlights. Under the hood is a 454 cubic inch Big Block that’s mated to a three-speed automatic. It even has an Impala rear end and coil-over front suspension. To say it is a one-off is an understatement.
At the other end of the custom spectrum was a 1977 Porsche 911 Targa. Sneak around to the back and there sat a big V8 engine. I can see it now — nail the gas at the apex of a corner and you can feel the understeer as the front tires unload! Of course, the Mazda Miata with an LS3 ‘Vette engine under the hood is likely just as much of a handful!
My highlight was a pristine 1956 Meteor Rideau Sunliner. They say they don’t make ’em like they used to — in this case how true. Stunning!
