Shelby celebrates 50 years with revived Daytona Coupe

In 1965, Carroll Shelby covered six of his brutish Cobras with aerodynamic bodywork designed to help beat Ferrari on high-speed circuits. The car was dubbed the “Daytona Coupe” and it earned Shelby an FIA World Championship.

Fifty years after that momentous victory, BoldRide reports that Shelby American is celebrating by producing a limited run of 50 achingly gorgeous (and expensive) replicas. Buyers can choose from a fiberglass or aluminum body – and either will be cheap.

The fiberglass cars will cost US$180,000 and the aluminum cars will sell for an eye-watering US$350,000. Those prices don’t even include an engine as the cars will be sold only as rolling chassis. Installing a 289 topped by Weber carburetors shouldn’t be too hard and any other engine would be sacrilegious.

The fiberglass and aluminum cars are slightly different in intent and construction.  Aluminum-bodied cars stays true to the original with a transverse leaf spring front suspension and a tube chassis similar to the original. On the other hand, the fiberglass version is softer and less true to the original – it comes with a coilover suspension, power steering, power windows and door locks, and air conditioning.

The 2015 Daytona Coupe will debut at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 12.
